Demand Quality Research: What the Data Says in 2026

A sourced summary of the research on B2B buying behavior, AI-assisted research, bot traffic, lead response and data quality, with what each figure does and does not prove.

The short answer

The research points one way. B2B buyers do most of their evaluation before contacting sellers, increasingly with AI. More than half of web traffic is automated. Inbound funnels convert a very small share of inquiries into revenue. Nobody has published a credible, industry-wide measure of how much inbound B2B demand is fake or unready, which is itself a reason to measure your own.

How we built this page

  • We only included figures we could trace to the publisher's own page or report.
  • Where a figure comes from a vendor or a survey, we say so.
  • Where it is a prediction, we say so.
  • Where a widely repeated statistic could not be traced to a primary source, we left it out and explain why at the end.

1. Buyers decide before they talk to you

Finding Source
First contact with sellers happened at about 61% of the buying journey in 2025, down from about 69% in 2024 6sense, 2025 Buyer Experience Report1
Buyers initiated 79% of first engagements (82% in prior years) 6sense, 20251
The vendor favored before first contact won four out of five deals. 95% of the time, the winner was on the day-one shortlist 6sense, 20251
67% of B2B buyers prefer a rep-free buying experience Gartner, survey of 646 buyers, August to September 2025, published March 20262

What it means: The part of the journey that decides the deal mostly happens before your form. A form submission is a late signal. Treating every submission as the start of the conversation misreads where the buyer actually is.

Caveat: 6sense sells account intelligence software. Its sample is large (nearly 4,000 buyers), but it is vendor research.

2. Research is moving into AI assistants

Finding Source
45% of B2B buyers used AI during a recent purchase Gartner, March 20262
94% of buyers report using LLMs 6sense, 20251
Traditional search engine volume predicted to drop 25% by 2026 as AI chatbots and virtual agents take share Gartner prediction, February 20243
Generative AI referrals to US retail sites grew 1,200% from July 2024 to February 2025. AI-referred visitors were 9% less likely to convert than other traffic, down from 43% in July 2024 Adobe Analytics, March 20254

What it means: A growing share of the buyers who reach you were shaped by an AI answer you never saw. In the Adobe data, AI-referred visitors were 9% less likely to convert than other traffic in February 2025, compared with 43% in July 2024.

Caveat: The adoption figures range from 45% to 94% because definitions and samples differ. "Used AI during a purchase" and "use LLMs" are not the same question. The Adobe data covers US consumer retail, not B2B.

3. More than half of web traffic is automated

Finding Source
Automated traffic was 51% of all web traffic in 2024, the first time in a decade it passed human traffic Imperva 2025 Bad Bot Report5
Bad bots were 37% of all internet traffic in 2024, up from 32% in 2023 Imperva, 20255

What it means: Any public form is exposed to a large amount of non-human activity. Not all of it reaches your forms, and not all automated activity is malicious. But "a form was submitted" no longer implies "a person wanted to talk to us".

Caveat: Imperva sells bot protection. The figures describe web traffic in general, not form submissions specifically.

4. Inbound funnels convert very little

Finding Source
The typical conversion rate from inquiry to closed-won in a lead-centric, MQL-based process is less than 1% Forrester waterfall benchmarks, based on its 2021 B2B Buying Survey6
Reps spend only 28% of their time actually selling Salesforce State of Sales, 5th edition, December 2022, 7,775 respondents7

What it means: Almost every inquiry does not become revenue, and reps have little selling time to spend on the ones that might. The economics favor deciding early where that time goes.

5. Speed matters, but only on the right leads

Finding Source
In an audit of 2,241 US companies, 37% responded to web leads within an hour. The average response time was 42 hours among firms that responded within 30 days, and 23% never responded HBR, 20118
In a separate analysis of 1.25 million sales leads at 42 US companies (29 B2C, 13 B2B), firms that contacted a lead within an hour were nearly 7 times as likely to qualify it as firms that waited even one hour longer, and more than 60 times as likely as firms that waited 24 hours or more HBR, 20118

What it means: Response speed is one of the strongest levers in inbound sales. But speed on every submission is hard to afford when many of them are not buyers. Deciding first is what makes speed on real demand affordable.

Caveat: The study is from 2011, and channels have changed since. Treat it as foundational research, not a current benchmark.

6. The cost of bad data is large, and poorly measured

Finding Source
Poor data quality costs organizations at least $12.9 million a year on average Gartner, 2020 research9
$84 billion was lost to ad fraud in 2023, 22% of online ad spend, forecast to reach $172 billion by 2028 Juniper Research, 202310
73% of B2B buyers actively avoid suppliers who send irrelevant outreach Gartner, June 202511

What it means:

  • Bad data and fraudulent traffic are expensive at the top of the funnel.
  • Bad follow-up has a cost on the buyer's side too. Calling someone who is not ready is not neutral. It can push away a buyer who would have come back later.

Caveat: The Gartner figure covers all data quality problems, not only lead data. The Juniper figure is a modeled estimate of ad fraud, not of lead fraud.

What the research does not tell you

We looked for a credible, industry-wide figure for the share of B2B inbound leads that are fake, automated or unready. We did not find one.

  • Vendor reports publish figures from their own customers or from traffic in general.
  • Single-client case studies are sometimes quoted as if they were industry averages.

Statistics we left out, and why:

  • "X% of B2B leads are fake." No primary, industry-wide source. The figures in circulation come from single vendors or single clients.
  • "0.75% of leads become customers." Widely attributed to SiriusDecisions, but we could not trace it to a primary source. Forrester's published benchmark says less than 1%, and that is what we use.
  • "75% of buyers prefer a rep-free experience." We could not trace it to a dated Gartner primary release. Gartner's newer surveys report 61% (2025) and 67% (2026). We use the latest.

The conclusion: the share of your inbound demand that is real, ready or neither depends on your channels, your market and your forms. It has to be measured on your own traffic. A decision layer labels every submission from the first day, so you can start measuring it.
